While addressing media persons
to list out his policing priorities on Wednesday, Inspector General of Police
(IGP) Praveer Ranjan said that he is concerned about growing rates of road
accidents in Pondicherry .
“Wearing of helmets is
absolutely non-existent in Puducherry,” said Mr. Ranjan. ”Statistics show that people
in the city die as they don’t wear helmets at any time. A written proposal has
been submitted to the government to firmly implement the helmet rule, keeping
the safety of riders in mind. Once we get the nod from the administration, we
will begin enforcement as early as possible which so far has received stiff
resistance from the public”
He also expressed the need
for creating awareness about wearing helmets, traffic regulation, lane driving
and speed regulations among the public as they have been neglected since a long
time.
IGP Ranjan disclosed that
Puducherry police lacked adequate women police constables and more women will
be soon recruited in the existing 400 vacancies.
Steps towards effective
policing and improvement of interface with the people through effective
interactions and beat policing etc. will be taken. “People should look upon the
police as a friendly and easily accessible unit. There should not be any
complaint of rude or impolite behaviour on the part of police,” he said, ”I
will take stringent on any misconduct on the police side.”
On excess fare collection by
auto drivers, he said,” the issue needed to be dealt with firmly.”
He also said, “Police force
must be armed with latest technology. I am hopeful of getting the approval from
the government for the proposal to set up CCTVs covering all parts of the UT as
part of the Safe City Project. So far, 90 per cent of records are digitised and
soon the entire country can be linked up on the network. This is being done as
part of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) project,
one of the Mission Mode Projects (MMPs) under e-governance plan.”
On technology exposure and
skill training, the IGP said, ”I would like to send batches of policemen to
other centres to undergo training in latest technologies.”
